La Canopée
Place Moulay Hassan
Rabat, Morocco
with Agence Karim Chakor & CBL Consultants
Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean proto-cities and the symbolic importance of trees in Islamic public spaces, the Moulay Hassan Canopy offers a modern interpretation of shade as a social gathering spot. This lightweight metal structure is set in the former Zevaco flower market square, redesigned by Tarik Oualalou. It engages in a dialogue with the existing trees while honouring the tradition of shaded squares. Navigating various technical challenges, the project pays homage to the century-old rubber trees on the site and rejuvenates the square, restoring it as the vibrant heart of the neighbourhood.
